Purpose of this Website

This website (“Laurie plays”) is a personal academic portfolio exploring games through game studies and affect theory, aimed at a general audience interested in games and media research. It is not operated as a commercial enterprise and does not sell goods or services.

1. Who is responsible for your data?

The controller responsible for the processing of personal data on this website is:

You can contact me regarding this Privacy Policy or questions concerning your personal data through the Contact Form.

(“Laurie” is my player and author name, and “Laurie plays” is the title of this website. As the data controller under the GDPR, this section identifies me by my actual legal name.)

2. What personal data do I collect?

This website is a personal, non-commercial portfolio and does not use personal data for advertising, profiling, or marketing.

I process three categories of personal data:

a) Information you submit through the contact form, which may include:

  • your name
  • your email address
  • the content of your message

I only ask for information necessary to communicate with you. Please do not include sensitive personal information in your message unless it is necessary for your inquiry.

b) Server log files, automatically recorded for every visitor to this website (see Section 7 below).

c) Information processed through Google Analytics, where you have given consent to analytics cookies and similar technologies (see Section 5 below).

3. Why do I process your data?

Contact form data: I use the information you provide solely to receive, respond to, and handle your inquiry. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interests) — my legitimate interest being the ability to communicate with people who contact me through this website. Where an inquiry concerns taking steps at your request before entering into a contract, processing may also be based on Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

Your information will not be used for advertising or added to a mailing list.

Server log data: processed to ensure the stability and security of the website (see Section 7).

Google Analytics data: processed, where you have given consent, to understand how visitors use the website and to improve its content and functionality. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent).

You can withdraw or change your consent at any time through the website’s cookie settings.

4. How is your data processed?

The contact form is provided by Fluent Forms, a WordPress plugin. Information submitted through the contact form is stored in the WordPress database on the server hosting this website. I do not use a separate email notification service or third-party form processor — submissions stay within the website’s own database.

The contact form is also protected by Google reCAPTCHA v3, a service provided by Google to detect and prevent spam and automated abuse. reCAPTCHA v3 runs in the background and analyzes interactions with the website to generate a risk score. In doing so, Google may process technical information such as your IP address, browser and device information, and information about your interaction with the website. reCAPTCHA is used solely to protect the contact form against spam and abuse.

The website is hosted by a hosting provider located in Germany.

This website uses Google Analytics, provided by Google and connected through the Site Kit by Google WordPress plugin. Google Analytics is used solely for website analytics and is activated only in accordance with your consent preferences.

The website also uses Google Search Console through Site Kit by Google. Search Console is used by me as the website owner to understand how the website appears in Google Search and how visitors find it.

5. Google Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google Ireland Limited.

Google Analytics helps me understand how visitors use the website, for example which pages are visited and how visitors navigate the site. I use this information solely to understand and improve the website.

Google Analytics may process information such as your IP address, device and browser information, pages visited, interactions with the website, and approximate geographic information. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies for this purpose.

Google Analytics is activated only in accordance with your consent preferences. Analytics cookies are not set unless you have given consent to statistics/analytics cookies through the website’s consent banner.

The legal basis for this processing is Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent).

You can withdraw or change your consent at any time through the website’s cookie settings.

Google may process personal data in countries outside the European Economic Area. Where applicable, Google relies on legally recognized safeguards for international data transfers.

6. Google Search Console

This website uses Google Search Console through Site Kit by Google.

Search Console allows me to understand how this website appears in Google Search and how people find it. It provides information such as search queries, impressions, clicks, click-through rates, and search positions.

Search Console is an administrative service used by me as the website owner. I do not use it to identify individual visitors or to track their behavior on this website.

7. Server Log Files

When you visit this website, my hosting provider automatically records certain technical information in server log files for every visitor — not just those who submit the contact form. This may include:

  • your IP address
  • the date and time of access
  • the page requested
  • browser type and version
  • referring URL

This data is collected to ensure the stability and security of the website (e.g., detecting and preventing misuse) and is not combined with other data about you.

The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in secure and reliable website operation).

8. Cookies and Similar Technologies

This website does not use cookies or similar technologies for advertising, behavioral tracking, profiling, or marketing.

Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies for website analytics. These are activated only where you have given the required consent through the website’s consent banner.

Google reCAPTCHA v3 runs in the background on the contact page to detect and prevent spam and automated abuse. It may use cookies and process technical information for this security purpose.

WordPress and other technical components of the website may also use technically necessary cookies where required for core functions to operate.

The website uses Complianz to manage cookie consent and record consent preferences. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time through the website’s cookie settings.

9. How long do I keep your data?

Contact form submissions: retained only as long as reasonably necessary to respond to your inquiry and handle any resulting communication. Once no longer needed, I will delete the information unless a longer retention period is required by law.

Server logs: retained by my hosting provider for seven days and then automatically deleted.

Google Analytics data: retained according to the data-retention settings configured for this website in Google Analytics. Analytics data is used for website statistics and is not retained by me for the purpose of identifying individual visitors.

10. Who receives your data?

I do not sell or otherwise provide your personal data to third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.

Depending on how you use the website, your data may be processed by:

  • my web hosting provider, which is technically necessary to operate the website and store contact-form submissions; and
  • Google Ireland Limited and other Google entities involved in providing Google Analytics and Google Search Console.

I have a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR) with my hosting provider covering the processing carried out on its behalf.

Google may process personal data outside the European Economic Area. Where applicable, Google relies on legally recognized safeguards for international data transfers.

11. Your rights under the GDPR

Under the GDPR, you have the right, subject to applicable legal requirements, to:

  • request access to your personal data;
  • request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data;
  • request deletion of your personal data;
  • request restriction of processing;
  • object to certain processing;
  • request data portability; and
  • lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.

You can exercise these rights through the Contact Form.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent data protection supervisory authority — for example, the Austrian Datenschutzbehörde (www.dsb.gv.at), or the supervisory authority of your own country of residence.

12. Changes to this Privacy Policy

I may update this Privacy Policy if the website or the way personal data is processed changes. The current version will always be available on this page.
